BEL AIR, Md.–The No. 1 seeded Monroe women's basketball team captured their third NJCAA district championship title as they downed No. 2 seeded Harford 85-69 on Sunday afternoon in the Region 20 Division 1 Women's Basketball Championship game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
· Monroe and Harford went back-and-forth in scoring in the opening quarter as Monroe tallied 15 points while Harford recorded 15.
· Hellary De Los Santos led the way in the first quarter for the Mustangs, tallying seven points and five boards while Sydney Husky and Alex Stewart each contributed three points.
· In the second quarter, the Mustangs put up 25 points while holding the Fighting Owls to 19.
· De Los Santos and Fabiana Poindujour each tallied eight points in the quarter while the Monroe defense forced six turnovers.
· At the end of the first half, the Mustangs took a 40-33 lead.
· In the third quarter, De Los Santos took over the game, scoring 11 points and tallying three boards.
· The Mustangs defense held the Fighting Owls to going 3-13 from the field and allowing zero three-pointers. They also forced 11 turnovers in the quarter, which helped give the Mustangs a 63-48 lead heading into the last quarter.
· Bre Jefferson sealed the game for the Mustangs, tallying eight points and two steals, which aided in the Mustangs tallying 22 points in the fourth quarter to give the Mustangs the eventual 85-69 victory.
STATS AND NOTES
· The Mustangs captured their third district title in program history.
· Monroe leads the all-time series history against the Fighting Owls 13-9.
· Head coach Mike Seney captured his 11th NJCAA district title in his career.
· The Mustangs will make their fifth NJCAA Division I National Championship Tournament.
