VIERA, Fl.–The Monroe University softball team (10-6 overall) swept their opening games at the Space Coast Games this afternoon, taking down Macomb CC 16-3 and Williston State by a score of 5-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
·     The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 in the bottom of the first inning off a pair of RBI singles by Kerris Johnson and Sophia Davis.
·     In the bottom of the second inning, the Mustangs offense went off, scoring 11 runs in just that one inning.
·     Four RBI singles and one RBI double contributed to the massive run effort, which included a three-RBI single by Richeilys Rodriguez to give the Mustangs a very comfortable 13-0 lead.
·     The Monarchs countered, scoring three runs off a two-RBI single and an RBI double to cut the Mustangs' lead to 13-3.
·     In the bottom of the third inning, Amanda Reyes stroked a double to right field, which scored a run to give the Mustangs a 14-3 lead.
·     The Mustangs then sealed the rest of the scoring in the bottom of the fourth inning off an RBI single by Johnson and an RBI ground out by Rodriguez to give the Mustangs the 16-3 lead and victory.
Game 2
·     In the top of the first inning, Viktoria Anderson ripped an RBI single to the shortstop, scoring Reese Surratt to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0.
·     Then, in the top of the second inning, the Mustangs put up three more runs off a two-RBI single by Rodriguez and Carsyn O'Daniels scoring on a wild pitch to give the Mustangs a 4-0 lead.
·     The Tetons countered in the bottom of the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly to cut the Mustangs' lead to 4-1.
·     In the top of the seventh inning, the Mustangs sealed the game with an RBI single by O'Daniels to put the Mustangs ahead 5-1.
STATS AND NOTES
·     The Mustangs lead the all-time series with Williston State 3-1.
·     Monroe also now leads the all-time series with Macomb 2-1.
·     Rodriguez led the offense for the Mustangs in the two games, tallying seven RBIs while batting 3-7 at the dish.
·     On the mound, Sophia Davis pitched in game one, going five innings and allowing three runs. She also struck out two batters.
·     In the second game, Jaleila Aupont started going all seven innings, allowing just one earned run and struck out 11. It's the third time this season she's tallied double-digit strikeouts in a game.
