VIERA, Fl.–The Monroe University softball team (12-6 overall) swept their pair of games at the Space Coast Games this afternoon, taking down Macomb CC 14-4 and Lake Michigan by a score of 10-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
·     The Mustangs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning off an RBI by Reese Surratt and a walked-in run by Zoe Thomson.
·     In the bottom of the third inning, the Mustangs tallied three runs off a two-run home run by Lizbeth Zambrano and a solo homer by Thomson to put the Mustangs ahead 5-0.
·     The Mustangs closed the fourth inning scoring five more runs off a pair of RBI doubles by Gabriella Pugliese and Veronika Anderson to give the Mustangs an 8-0 lead.
·     Later in the inning, Thomson ripped an RBI single to left field, and Alexis Ortiz tallied an RBI on a fielder's choice to secure the 10-0 victory.
Game 2
·     In the top of the first inning, Kerris Johnson ripped an RBI single to the second baseman, scoring Reese Surratt to put the Mustangs ahead 1-0.
·     Rodriguez then hit a sacrifice fly which scored a run to close the first inning with the Mustangs ahead 2-0.
·     In the bottom of the first inning, the Monarchs took the lead at 3-2 off an RBI double and a passed ball.
·     The Mustangs came back to take the lead in the top of the second inning, off an RBI single by Alyssa Sanchez to tie the game at 3-3.
·     Then Surratt launched an RBI double to center field, scoring two runs to put the Mustangs ahead 5-3.
·     Surratt then scored off a ground out by Johnson to increase their lead to 6-3.
·     In the top of the third inning, after Jaleila Aupont got hit by a pitch, which scored in a run to put the Mustangs ahead 7-3.
·     Johnson then singled on a ground ball to the first baseman, which scored in two runs to give the Mustangs a 9-3 lead.
·     In the top of the fourth inning, Aupont reached on an error by the second baseman, which scored a run to put the Mustangs ahead 10-3.
·     In the fifth inning, the Mustangs added four more runs off three RBI singles by Rodriguez, Pugliese, and Aupont to give the Mustangs a comfortable 14-3 lead.
·     The Monarchs added one more run in the game in the bottom of the fifth inning off a fielder's choice to result in the 14-4 victory for the Mustangs.
STATS AND NOTES
·     The Mustangs narrowed the all-time series with Lake Michigan as the RedHawks lead 4-2.
·     Monroe also now leads the all-time series with Macomb 3-1.
·     Johnson led the offense for the Mustangs in the two games, tallying three RBIs while batting 5-6 at the dish.
·     On the mound, Aupont pitched in game one, going five innings and allowing zero runs, and struck out nine batters.
·     In the second game, Thomson started going all three innings, allowing just one earned run and struck out three.
