NEW YORK–Sophomore Modou Sanneh of the Monroe University men's indoor track and field team had a record-breaking day at the Rutgers Scarlet Knight Open at the Nike Amory Track Center on Friday, earning his spot at the 2026 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Topeka, KS.
Sanneh was dominant in the 600m event, highlighting a phenomenal day for the Mustangs. The second-year native of Gambia ran a time of 1:17.56 in the 600m, which not only won the event but also punched his ticket to the national championship as well. Sanneh's 600m time is also the fastest indoor time in Mustang history, a school record, a new Gambian national record, and currently ranks him number four in the NJCAA across all divisions.
A trio of Mustang freshmen also competed alongside Sanneh in the 600m run and turned in impressive performances as well. Jaheim Lawrence placed seventh overall in the event with a personal best time of 1:22.18, Yassine Rahoui was the next mustang finisher with a time of 1:24.85, and Jazir Harris ran a time of 1:33.44.
Freshman Emilio Bishop also turned in an impressive performance in the 60m dash. The first-year native of Grenada/ Venezuela ran a time of 6.85, which not only placed him first overall in the event but also was a personal best performance for him as well. He also just missed qualification by three-tenths. A trio of Mustangs also competed alongside Bishop in the 60m dash and had personal best performances as well. Sophomore Christian Gabriel placed fourth overall in the event with a personal best time of 6.91. In the unseeded section of the 60m dash, sophomore Elijah Upsher ran a time of 7.52. He was closely followed by freshman Keba Cisse, who ran a personal best time of 7.63, and sophomore Micah McHardy, who ran a time of 7.76.
Four Mustangs competed in the 200m; sophomore Christian Gabriel ran a time of 23.06, Elijah Upsher ran a time of 24.46, Micah McHardy ran a time of 24.61, and freshman Keba Cisse ran a personal best time of 24.89. Freshman Boitshepo Mashilo placed second overall in the men 1000m run with a personal best time of 2:31.92, which just narrowly missed qualifications by six-tenths of a second, Sophomore Nkanyezi Ziqubu ran an indoor personal best time of 8:49.68  in the 3000m run.
In the Men's Long Jump, freshman Shaquane Toussaint placed seventh overall in the championship section with a jump of 6.88m, and sophomore Elijah Upsher jumped a season best of 6.02m in the open section.
The 1600m relay team of freshmen Jaheim Lawrence, Emilio Bishop, Boitshepo Mashilo and Yassine Rahoui, rose to the challenge with one of the fastest performances of the day in the event. The quartet placed second overall in the event with a time of 3:27.30.
Lawrence opened the race with a 50.78 split on the first leg to set the tone. Bishop followed with a 53.78. Mashilo, an 800/1500m specialist, handled the third leg in 52.00 before handing the baton to Rahoui, who closed in a time of 50.72.
