GALVESTON, Texas – The Monroe University softball team (7-5 overall) dropped their last games in Texas to Galveston College (16-0 overall) 12-7 and 3-1 on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Game 1)
· The Mustangs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off an error by the shortstop, scoring Kerris Johnson to give the Mustangs the early lead.
· The Whitecaps countered, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the first inning courtesy of a three-run homerun, an RBI single, and an RBI double to give the Whitecaps a 5-1 lead.
· In the top of the second, the Mustangs added one run off an RBI single by Reese Surratt, which scored Alexis Ortiz to narrow the Whitecaps' lead to 5-2.
· Galveston answered with five more runs in the bottom of the second inning off an RBI single, two-RBI double, and a solo home run to give the Whitecaps a 10-2 lead.
· In the top of the third inning, the Mustangs attempted a comeback, scoring three runs, which included a pair of RBI singles and a three-run homerun by Lizbeth Zambrano, to narrow the Whitecaps' lead to 10-7.
· The Whitecaps sealed the game one victory with a two-run homerun to take the 12-7 victory in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Game 2
· The Whitecaps jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning off an error by the pitcher and a two-run homerun.
· The Mustangs only salvaged one run in the game in the top of the sixth off an RBI single by Zambrano, resulting in the 3-1 defeat.
STATS AND NOTES
· Zambrano tallied her first homerun of the season in game one.
· Galveston leads the all-time series 12-0.
· In game one, the Mustangs tallied 11 hits in the game while knocking five hits in game two.
· Surratt is currently on a three-game hit streak as she went 1-4 in game one and 1-3 in game two.
