STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. –The Monroe University women's indoor track and field team wrapped up its regular season slate with one more national qualification for freshman Brooke Sheppard at the Fastrack Last Chance Meet on Friday.
Sheppard, who already qualified for both the 800m and 1000m at nationals, earned qualification in the 600m via the 500m at Ocean Breeze for the last meet on the schedule. The freshman ran a time of 1:17.44 in the 500m to qualify for the 600m (1:37.58) She was the overall winner in the event in her first time running the 500m, locking in a spot in Topeka, KS. Freshman Latejah Bailey placed second overall in the event with a time of 1:19.80. Bailey later returned to run the 200m; she placed sixth overall with a personal best time of 26.54.
Sophomore Tanesia Gardiner placed first overall in the 1000m with a time of 3:07.66. In the women's long jump, Aleisha Clarke placed fourth overall with a jump of 5.16m.
Sheppard, Gardiner, Clarke and nine of her teammates will take the trip to Kansas next week as they compete at the NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Nationals.
