New Rochelle, NY - Monroe University turned in a clean, efficient performance Saturday, sweeping Roxbury Community College in straight sets, 25–10, 25–10, 25–19, to earn its first victory of the season.
The Mustangs controlled the match from the opening serve, hitting .345 as a team with 30 kills and 14 service aces while limiting Roxbury to a negative hitting percentage. Monroe dictated tempo with aggressive serving and balanced offense throughout all three sets.
Set one set the tone.
After an early exchange, Monroe used a long service run to break it open. Jeisson Terrero and the Mustangs strung together multiple points from the service line, while Amavih Calvert and Yensy Rodriguez finished rallies at the net. Monroe hit .556 in the frame with 10 kills and no errors to cruise to a 25–10 win.
The Mustangs carried that momentum into the second set, again separating early with pressure serves and quick transitions. Cristian Nunez orchestrated the offense efficiently, spreading the ball across the front row as Monroe built another comfortable margin and never looked back.
Monroe's most complete stretch came in the third.
Calvert led the attack with nine kills on .438 hitting, while Rodriguez added five kills without an error. Chijiaku Ndukanma chipped in six kills, and Luis Dutra provided a spark late with key points from the service line to help close the door. Nunez totaled 13 assists and two aces, and Hudson Irving added 14 assists as the Mustangs continued to run a balanced system.
At the service line, Monroe consistently pressured Roxbury's receive, finishing with 14 aces. Benny Rosado and Rodriguez each delivered multiple runs that forced out-of-system swings and extended leads.
Defensively, the Mustangs limited second chances and kept rallies short, holding Roxbury to 11 total kills and a -.022 hitting percentage.
With the win, Monroe improves to 1–1 on the young season and builds momentum heading into the remainder of tournament play.
