Jones, Cohen, Gardiner and Sheppard Qualify For Nationals As Women’s Indoor Track And Field Competes At Dr. Sander Invitational

New York, NY - The Monroe University Women's Indoor Track and Field team competed at the Dr. Sander Invitational this weekend, with sophomores Kaliyah Jones, Sarah Lea Cohen, Tanesia Gardiner, and freshman Brooke Sheppard punching their tickets to the NJCAA Championships with their respective performances.

Jones opened Day One on Friday with a strong showing in her debut in the 400m. The St. Kitts and Nevis native posted a personal-best time of 56.84, earning a spot in Topeka, KS, for the NJCAA Indoor National Championships in March.

Cohen joined Jones in qualifying for Nationals with a personal-best time of 2:15.82 in the 800m run. Cohen will also head to Topeka in March to compete in the event. Joining Jones and Cohen at Nationals will be teammates Gardiner and Sheppard, who also secured their qualifying marks. Gardiner ran a time of 2:18.62 in the 800m, while Sheppard clocked a time of 2:20.55 in the same event.

Freshman Analissa Redmond made her collegiate debut this weekend in the seeded section of the women's 400m, clocking a time of 59.40. Her teammate Latejah Bailey also competed in the open section of the 400m, where she recorded an indoor personal-best time of 1:01.59.

Sophomore Brinel Thomas made her debut this weekend in the long jump, recording a mark of 5.31 meters at the Dr. Sander Invitational.

Rounding out the Mustang competitors, freshmen Keishawnna Phillip and Zanya Belfon, along with sophomore Aleisha Clarke, competed in the 200m and 60m hurdles, respectively. In the 200m, Phillip clocked an indoor personal-best time of 26.03, while Belfon ran a time of 27.87. Clarke made her season debut in the 60m hurdles and posted a time of 9.19.

The Mustangs will have a short week ahead as they travel to Boston to compete in the John Thomas Terrier Classic on Friday, January 30, and Saturday, January 31.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
