West Windsor, NJ – The Monroe University softball team fell to Mercer County Community College in doubleheader on Thursday, dropping the first contest, 4-2, before losing on a walk-off in game two, 6-4.
The Mustangs trailed 4-0 before rounding off two runs in the sixth. A stolen base from sophomore
Gabrielle Gonzalez put her in scoring position, eventually scoring on an error from the Vikings. Freshman
Lizbeth Zambrano then drove in sophomore
Nathalie Mongrain.
But the seventh inning saw Monroe go down in order, resulting in a tough loss in the first leg.
Game two was a back-and-forth affair that saw Monroe take a 4-3 lead in the top of the fifth. Gonzalez once again put the Mustangs in a great position to score with two stolen bases to place her at third. A double from sophomore
Yarializ Maldonado scored the speedy left fielder before Mongrain singled in Maldonado in the next at-bat.
However, the Vikings rallied in the next half inning to tie it, eventually setting up the walk-off home run.
Monroe will return home for its final home doubleheader of the season on Saturday. It will take on CCBC-Catonsville as the program celebrates its sophomore class prior to the noon first pitch.
