New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University softball team split its doubleheader against CCBC-Catonsville on Saturday. The Mustangs took game one by a score of 17-5 before dropping a nailbiter in game two, 16-13.
Overall, the Mustangs scored 30 runs on 27 hits, highlighting a special day for the program as prior to the game the 12 sophomores on the team were celebrated.
In game one, the fireworks began early with freshman
Lizbeth Zambrano and sophomore
Maricela Colon both homering in the frame. Sophomore
Nathalie Mongrain then kept the big hits coming in the second with a two-run home run to make it 8-0 early.
A solid third and fourth inning from the Cardinals made the deficit manageable, but a massive fourth inning for the Mustangs catapulted them to victory.
It was a sophomore fueled inning as
Georgia Burr,
Gabriella Diaz,
Yarializ Maldonado and
Aisling Wilson all picked up RBIs in the frame. On the mound, the sophomore flare continued with
Nadyelly Bones Rodriguez picking up a complete game victory.
Game two was much of the same early for the Mustangs as Maldonado and Zambrano singled in the first two runs. Freshman
Emily Hernandez made it 3-0 on a sacrifice fly before Catonsville scored five consecutive to make it 5-3 in its favor.
Monroe reclaimed the lead in the second with a five-run inning of its own. Back-to-back bases-loaded walks capped off the frame, putting the Mustangs ahead by three. Two more runs in the third put the score at 10-5, but the Cardinals continued the back-and-forth affair with a six-run fourth.
Trailing 16-12 in the final inning, Colon doubled in Burr, but it was too little too late as the Mustangs dropped their sprint to the finish.
The Mustangs head into its second-to-last regular season doubleheader on Sunday when they will take on Genesee Community College in Batavia, NY. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
