New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University softball team earned a 10-2 victory over Corning Community College on Saturday to move to 3-0 at the Empire State Invitational.
Sophomore
Maricela Colon was the catalyst, supplying two hits and four RBIs in the five-inning affair. Fellow sophomore
Gabrielle Gonzalez also shined, going 3-for-4 with a double. Sophomore
Gabriella Diaz and freshman
Georgia Wilson each recorded multiple hits.
After falling behind 1-0, the Mustangs rattled off eight consecutive runs to take control of the contest. A big six-run inning by Monroe was the spark it needed, as Colon's three-run homer bookended the difference-making frame.
While the offense was humming, freshman
Kelsea Bauer secured her fifth win of the season in another masterful performance. Bauer threw a complete game, allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out five.
The Mustangs were also heavily involved on the basepaths, swiping seven bags. Gonzalez moved to 14 stolen bases on the season with three on the day, while Colon swiped two. Diaz and freshman
Alexis Ortiz rounded out the seven stolen bases on the day.
Monroe will close out the Empire State Invitational on Sunday when it takes on Suffolk County Community College at 2:00 pm.
