New Rochelle, NY - The Monroe University softball team tacked on a whopping 29 runs in its victory over Suffolk County Community College on Sunday to close out the Empire State Invitational at a perfect 4-0.
The Mustangs swept their doubleheader against Genesee Community College on Friday, then defeated Corning Community College on Saturday before routing the Sharks on Sunday.
In the lopsided victory, seven different players recorded multi-hits, with sophomore Maricela Colon and freshmen McKenzie Williams and Georgia Wilson — who pinch hit in the outing — supplying three hits for the Mustangs.
A sign of things to come came with the second at-bat of the game, as after an infield single by sophomore Gabrielle Gonzalez, sophomore Gabriella Diaz launched a two-run home run to center to get the scoring started. Sophomore Georgia Burr then continued her hot stretch with a three-run homer to cap off a dominant first inning.
The hits (particularly home runs) kept on coming, as Colon and Williams both homered in the second. Diaz capped off a nine-run second with a two-RBI double, putting the Mustangs up 14-0.
After a more tame three-run third inning, Monroe tacked on 12 runs in the fourth to highlight an all-around excellent performance by the offense. Sophomore Nathalie Mongrain recorded two home runs in the inning, with Wilson also homering, putting the home run tally at seven for the day.
Sunday's 29 runs are a clear-cut season-high and marks the fourth straight game the offense has pieced together ten or more runs. As good as the offense was, the defense limited the Sharks to seven runs on zero errors.
All in all, Monroe scored 64 runs across four games at the Empire State Invitational, good for a 16 run average. It will look to continue its hot hitting in its next outing in Viera, FL. The first of eight games in the Sunshine State will be against Iowa Central Community College on Thursday at 10:00 am.
