New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University JV baseball team dropped both of its games against Paramount Academy on Friday. Game one went the way of the Grizzlies, 10-0, in six innings, before the Mustangs fell in a close contest in game two, 5-3.
The Mustangs couldn't limit Paramount early in game one as the visitors put up runs in each of the first five innings. Of the ten runs yielded by the pitching staff, only four were earned as errors racked up for the Mustangs.
Monroe put up more fight in the second half of the doubleheader, taking a 1-0 lead off the bat of sophomore
Melvin Laracuente. But the Grizzlies responded with a three-run fourth to take a 3-1 advantage in the latter stages of the contest.
Two more insurance runs were tacked on, but the Mustangs responded with two of their own. Freshman
Mario Bernard hit a two-RBI pinch-hit single, but was thrown out on the play to effectively end Monroe's comeback effort.
A fly out from freshman
Dominic Guzman put an end to the day.
Monroe will next take on the Hofstra University Club Team in a doubleheader on Sunday starting at 10:00 am.
