Easton, PA – The Monroe University JV baseball team got a big boost from its offense in a doubleheader sweep of Lafayette College Club on Sunday. The Mustangs scored 24 runs on 26 hits across the two contests, winning 16-4 and 8-4, respectively.
Game one was the
Josh Peralta show as the sophomore went 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Peralta started off his day with a double in the second. An RBI double in the fifth preceded a punctuating three-run home run in the sixth to put Monroe up 13-4.
Sophomore
Melvin Laracuente also shined with a 4-for-4 performance. Laracuente, who joined Peralta and freshman
Matthew DeFisher with two doubles a piece, drove in four runs in the 16-4 route of the Leopards.
Freshman
Yibran Almonte recorded three hits and three stolen bags, while fellow freshman
Vernon Hudson and
Cesar Candelario also supplied three hits in the opening matchup of the day.
On the mound, freshman
Waldy Peralta earned the win with 3.1 shutout innings in relief. The infielder turned relief pitcher allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out a team-high four batters.
In game two, the Mustangs pounced on Lafayette's errors as four of the first runs of the game were scored on errors. Leading 5-2, a crucial two-RBI double from freshman
Kaedrin Rolle broke the game open.
While Lafayette tallied two more runs in the middle innings, the Mustang bullpen held it down, limiting the Leopards to just two hits. Sophomore
Gian Acevedo and freshman
Nelson Moronta both provided no-hit performances, while freshmen starter
Mario Bernard and
Jariel Moran allowed just one hit each.
Monroe sits at 12-13-1 on the season and will take on Citius Prep twice in the next two days to close out the season. Game one against Citius Prep will take place on Monday at 3:30 pm at Flowers Park.
