Baltimore, MD – The Monroe women's basketball team is set to compete in the Region 20 Tournament this weekend with a berth into the NJCAA National Tournament up for grabs. The Mustangs enter the four-team tournament as the #1-seed and will take on hosts Baltimore City Community College on Friday at 5:00 pm.
The winner of Monroe's matchup against #4-seed Baltimore City will take on the winner of #2-seed Harford Community College and #3-seed Allegany College of Maryland. The Mustangs are undefeated against the field.
In their two matchups this season, the Mustangs outscored the Panthers by an average margin of 58.5 points. In the first meeting at Baltimore City, freshmen
Ariel Walker and
Kaylyn Lelie led the way with 23 and 21 points, respectively.
The rematch at the Monroe Athletic Complex saw five players score in double figures. Sophomore
Alycia Secchiaroli recorded a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double, while freshman
Carlota Lopez led the team in scoring.
The Mustangs are looking for their fifth straight NJCAA National Tournament appearance and second straight under head coach
Camille McLellan. Sitting at 23-4, Monroe is just two wins away from punching its ticket to Casper, WY.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
