New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University men's volleyball team clinched a straight-set victory (25-15, 25-17, 25-20) over Monroe University (Bronx) on Wednesday, capping off its two-day doubleheader.
Freshman
Erick Concepcion led the way with ten kills, while fellow freshman
Santiago Valenca went 6-for-8 with no attack errors on the day. Freshmen
Amir Hudgins (5),
Glenn Gandarillas (4) and
Quez Martin (3), and sophomore
James Ross rounded out the offense on the night.
Defensively, Gandarillas continued a stellar two-game stretch with ten digs. Valenca recorded a season-high 20 assists as he operated as the main setter in the match.
While the Mustangs recorded zero service aces on the night, they made up for it in capitalizing on the Express's mistakes. The Express recorded 21 attack errors on the night, making for a smooth victory for the Mustangs.
The Mustangs dominated the opening set outside of a late 5-0 run by the Express. In set two, an early 13-3 lead set the way for another win. While set three was a bit tighter score-wise, the Mustangs ran away with it thanks to scoring in bunches.
Monroe rebounded after a tough loss to Nassau Community College the day prior, and will take on Borough of Manhattan Community College on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
