Garden City, NY – The #2-seed Monroe University men's volleyball team bowed out of the Region 15 Tournament on Saturday, suffering a 3-1 (25-16, 26-28, 23-25, 19-25) loss to #3-seed Borough of Manhattan Community College.
After defeating the Panthers in straight-sets in the prior two meetings — including last weekend in the regular season finale — the Mustangs lost three straight sets following a comfortable first set to exit the tournament.
Freshman
Amir Hudgins was on fire for Monroe, accumulating 16 kills at a 41.4% clip. But Hudgins was the lone Mustang to record double-digit kills as the rest of the offense was quiet. First Team All-Region honorees in freshmen
Santiago Valenca and
Erick Concepcion combined for six kills, with Valenca playing in three of four sets.
Hudgins was also active on the defensive end with a team-high 11 digs.
Eight straight points during the later stage of the first set helped set up a key moment for the Mustangs as they looked for a third consecutive win against the Panthers. But a battle in the second set went the way of Borough of Manhattan despite freshman
Quez Martin tying it up at 26.
The Panthers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the third set as Monroe never recovered. The fourth and final set saw the Mustangs get outplayed by the Panthers, as evidenced by Borough of Manhattan's 36.8% attack percentage. Despite taking a 13-11 lead, the Panthers embarked on a 14-6 run to close out the contest.
Monroe will look to regroup ahead of the 2025 NJCAA Men's Volleyball Invitational. It will enter as the #3-seed and will take on #6-seed Union College on Friday, April 4, at 11:00 am.
