New Rochelle, NY – Freshman
Nair Jamanika of the Monroe University baseball team had an explosive day at the plate as the team earned its third win in four tries against Rockland Community College on Tuesday, defeating the Fighting Hawks, 15-5, in eight innings.
It was the
Nair Jamanika show as the freshman collected five hits in six at-bats and drove in five runs. He concluded the contest with a game-sealing RBI single to left center as the run-rule went into effect. The Curacao native also stole a team-high four bases.
A 2-0 lead after the first inning was soon matched by Rockland in the bottom half of the inning. But the Mustangs responded with a five-run third — their highest single-inning run total on the day.
Jamanika got the scoring started on a two-RBI single. After freshman
Marcus Mercado recorded an RBI on an infield single, sophomore
Ronald Almanzar tripled to deep left field to score two and put the Mustangs ahead 7-2.
Sophomore
Baptiste Blancot and Jamanika padded the lead in the middle innings before sophomore
Anthony Fernandez and freshman
Ryan Marchina recorded back-to-back sacrifice flies to make it 12-2.
After six strong innings from freshman
Sebastian Rivera, sophomore
Emmanuel Ramos took the mound to close out the ball game. While Rockland avoided the seventh inning run-rule, it was only temporary as Fernandez and Jamanika drove in runs to finalize the contest in the eighth.
Freshman
Jesus Nieves recorded two triples on the day. Almanzar joined Nieves with multiple hits, while Fernandez added three RBIs to his season-long tally.
Monroe will have a rematch against Rockland on Thursday at 3:30 pm.
