Viera, FL – The Monroe University softball team split its Saturday doubleheader in day three of its Florida trip. After dropping an 8-0, six-inning contest to Bryant and Stratton College, the Mustangs went on to defeat Williston College, 10-3, in the second game of the day.
Against the Tetans in game two, Monroe exploded for 10 runs on 11 hits. Sophomores
Maricela Colon and
Aisling Wilson, along with freshman
Antreece Coleman picked up two hits on the gam, with Wilson driving in two runs.
Sophomore
Gabriella Diaz was the catalyst on both sides of the ball. A three-run homer supplied the offense for the Mustangs, while her three no-hit innings in relief provided enough defense to stave off Williston. Diaz struck out seven in the affair.
A narrow contest late into the game, Monroe piled on six runs in the sixth to effectively end the ball game. Sophomore
Georgia Burr supplied the first run via an error before Coleman singled in Wilson. Then, Diaz capped off the inning with a three-run home run to left field.
In a game that saw Williston commit seven errors, the Mustangs took advantage to cap off the day on a high note after falling to Bryant and Stratton College earlier.
The Bobcats limited the Mustangs to four hits in the 8-0 loss. Freshmen
Lizbeth Zambrano and
Yarializ Maldonado, and Wilson were the lone beneficiaries of reaching base via hit in the contest.
Monroe will conclude its eight-game road stint in the Sunshine State with matchups against Williston and Illinois Central College on deck for Sunday.
