JV Baseball Storms Back In The Eighth To Win 15-7 Over Citius Prep

New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University JV baseball team stormed back from a 7-0 deficit to defeat Citius Prep, 15-7, on Thursday. A huge nine-run rally in the eighth inning was the catalyst in Monroe's comeback victory.

After falling behind big by the third inning, the Mustangs chipped away at the deficit to make it a 7-6 ball game heading into the bottom half of the eighth. From there, the offense chomped away and came out on top for their first win of the 2025 season.

Sophomore Jeurys Cervas got the scoring started with a two-RBI single to give the Mustangs their first lead of the game. The Mustangs batted around the order, getting a total of 15 batters up to the plate in the inning.

Freshmen Daniel German-Nero, Vernon Hudson, Matthew DeFisher, and Cesar Candelario, and sophomore Josh Peralta all picked up RBIs in the inning. Cervas roped a single to center in his second at-bat to make it 14-7 and bring his RBI total to a team-high three before Candelario drove in the final run of the inning on a bases-loaded walk.

It was an inspired comeback win that started with an RBI single from German-Nero in the third. Sophomore Melvin Laracuente continued his hot hitting to begin the season with an RBI single of his own in the fourth. Then, a three-run sixth inning was fueled by freshman John Raposo as the New York native hit a single up the middle to score the team's first of the inning.

Two more runs crossed home plate in the sixth before the Mustangs packed it on in the eighth.

Cervas, Candelario and Laracuente — who walked a total of eight time in the win — recorded multi-hits on the day. On the mound, sophomore Juan Ramos was spectacular in relief, earning the win after hurling 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out ten.

The Mustangs will take on Dominican University JV on Monday, March 17, in its next outing. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm at Flowers Park.
