Sumter, SC – The Monroe University softball team bounced back in a big way on Saturday, sweeping its doubleheader at USC Sumter by a combined score of 19-1. Game one went the Mustangs way, 10-1, before game two ended in five innings, with Monroe prevailing, 9-0.
Game one was a perfect cohesion of effective hitting and pitching as the Mustangs limited Sumter to five hits while they themselves generated an impressive 17 hits.
It started on the mound with freshman
Sudaishely Hooi recording the win in her collegiate debut. She hurled three innings and allowed just two hits and one earned run. The bullpen backed Hooi up, with freshman
Kelsea Bauer and sophomore
Gabriella Diaz coming in and allowing no runs on two innings pitched each.
The bats backed up the stellar pitching as Monroe packed it on. Freshman
Lizbeth Zambrano continued her scorching start to the season with four hits and two RBIs. Sophomore
Nadyelly Bones Rodriguez came a home run short of the cycle, while fellow sophomores
Nathalie Mongrain and
Maricela Colon, and freshmen
Reese Surratt and
Yarializ Maldonado recorded multi-hit outings.
In the second game, Monroe used a six-run first to cap off the sweep. Mongrain highlighted the solid first inning of action with a two-RBI single to make it 5-0. Freshman
Carsyn O'Daniels recorded her first multi-hit effort of her career with a two-run inside the park home run in the top of the second to make it an 8-0 ball game.
On the mound, freshmen
Zoey Zamora and
Georgia Wilson combined for a shutout, allowing just two hits against the Fire Ants.
Monroe picks up two crucial wins to make it 2-2 on the season. It will look for another doubleheader sweep in its final two-game set of the weekend when it takes on USC Union on Sunday. Game one is scheduled for 11:00 am, with game two scheduled for 1:00 pm.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
