Union, SC – The Monroe University softball team splits its final doubleheader of the weekend on Sunday at USC Union, winning the first game, 6-4, before falling to the Bantams, 12-4, in game two.
The Mustangs prevailed in game one thanks to timely hitting as they held onto a narrow lead for much of the contest. A three-run fifth inning, highlighted by RBIs from sophomore
Nathalie Mongrain and freshman
Reese Surratt, put Monroe up 4-2 late.
An additional run for the Bantams made it a one-run affair before freshmen
Yarializ Maldonado and Alexis Ortix generated two crucial runs in the final inning to put the Mustangs up for good.
Sophomore
Maricela Colon hit a solo home run in the win, while Surratt recorded two hits.
Game two saw the Mustangs fall in an 8-0 hole early, effectively putting the sweep out of reach.
On the weekend, the Mustangs went 3-3 with a doubleheader sweep against USC Sumter sandwiched between their series's against Gaston and USC Union.
They'll have a week off before heading to Columbus, GA, for a five-game showcase. Their first game of the tournament will be on Friday, February 21, against Indian River State College at 1:30 pm.
