Dallas, NC – The Monroe University softball team opened its six-game road trip with two losses in Friday's doubleheader at Gaston College. The Mustangs dropped game one, 10-2, before falling to the Rhinos in game two, 10-1.
In the season opener, freshman
Lizbeth Zambrano had a solid showing, generating both runs of the ball game. In the first inning, Monroe earned a 1-0 lead off an RBI groundout from the Bronx native. Zambrano then hit a blistering solo home run to center field in the top of the fourth.
While Monroe took an early 1-0 lead, six runs crossed the plate in the Rhinos half of the inning.
Sophomore
Gabrielle Gonzalez recorded two hits in the opening game of the season, with sophomore
Maricela Colon collecting a hit in the outing as well. Gonzalez also swiped two bags in the losing effort.
In game two, Monroe fell behind early and couldn't recover. Colon and sophomore
Nathalie Mongrain collected hits in the game, with Colon stealing base twice to put the Mustangs at four total across the doubleheader.
Monroe will travel south to Sumter, SC, for its next doubleheader affair on Saturday. It will face off against USC Sumter at 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm in hopes of earning its first win of the young season.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
