New Rochelle, NY – To close out its home schedule, the Monroe University women's basketball team defeated SUNY Sullivan, 66-51, on Tuesday. The freshmen trio of
Sydney Huskey,
Carlota Lopez and
Kaylyn Lelie — who recorded a double-double — combined for 42 points, with Huskey leading the way with 17.
Monroe forced 27 turnovers in a final vintage performance in front of its home crowd. Huskey led the way with five steals, while five other Mustangs recorded multiple steals on the day.
The Mustangs asserted their dominance early, jumping out to an 18-10 lead by the end of the first quarter. They continued to overwhelm the Generals by limiting the opposition to six points in the second quarter.
A high-scoring third quarter from both sides allowed the Generals to stay within striking distance, but a buzzer-beating three-pointer from freshman
Ariel Walker set the tone for a decisive fourth quarter.
Defense prevailed once again as the Mustangs limited Sullivan. Sophomore
Nicole Bencosme shined in the second half, contributing nine points. Overall, the Mustangs outshined Sullivan to earn the first win of the two-game series to close out the regular season.
Monroe will meet up again with the Generals on Thursday at 6:00 pm in Loch Sheldrake, NY.
