New Rochelle, NY – Behind a complete team effort, the Monroe University men's volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-20, 25-13, 25-15) victory over Roxbury Community College on Friday.
While freshman
Santiago Valenca paced the team with 13 kills, five other Mustangs recorded three or more kills on the night. Sophomore
James Ross was on the hook for six kills on ten attempts, while freshman
Chijiaku Ndukanma went 5-for-7.
Freshman
Murilo Gibeli was once again effective as the main setter, recording 23 assists. Valenca was joined by freshman
Luis Dutra and sophomore
Aamar Hanif with double-digit digs to complete the all-around display.
All three sets were competitive, but the Tigers made a real run at the Mustangs in set one. A 5-0 run by Roxbury made it 20-18 in favor of the Mustangs, however, out of a Roxbury timeout with Monroe two points away from securing the win,

Amir Hudgins closed it out on offensive attacks.
Set two was all about momentum for the Mustangs as they rattled off three runs of four or more points. None being more important than the final 4-0 run to close out the Tigers, 25-13.
In set three, a rapid start by Roxbury soon turned into a rout by the Mustangs. Six different players recorded a kill as Monroe went up 19-10. A late 4-0 run by the Tigers didn't lead anywhere as the Mustangs scored five straight to close out the match.
At 8-4, Monroe will host Kingsborough Community College on Friday, February 28, at 7:00 pm in its next match.

The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 26 teams competing across nine sports. There are 19 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
