Branchburg, NJ – The Monroe University women's basketball team suffered a 60-53 loss at Raritan Valley Community College on Monday.
The Mustangs led by two at the half, but couldn't close out the Lions over the final 20 minutes. They were outscored in both quarters as shots wouldn't fall, shooting just 35.4% across the second half.
Sophomore
Qaizden Stephano led all scorers with 16 points and achieved a double-double with ten rebounds, while freshmen
Kaylyn Lelie and
Zanaya Parsons scored 14 and ten points, respectively.
Coming off a huge win against previously unbeaten Union, the Mustangs came out of the gates performing well on the defensive end. Of the 15 points scored, Monroe tallied ten points off turnovers. Lelie and Stephano scored six points apiece.
The second quarter saw the Lions hang around as they matched Monroe's output of 14 points. That boost to Raritan Valley's confidence to hang with the red-hot Mustangs led to the Lions slowly teetering the scales in their favor in the second
half of play.
Monroe cut the deficit to five with a minute to go, but it was too late.
Sitting at 19-4 with two games left in the regular season, Monroe's next chance at earning a victory will come on Wednesday, February 19, at 5:00 pm against Lackawanna College.
