Bryn Mawr, PA – Trailing 70-58 with four minutes remaining, the Monroe University men's basketball team mounted a 17-2 run to avenge its previous loss and defeat Harcum College, 75-72 on Saturday.
A traditional three-point play from sophomore
Devere Palmer Jr. got the run started. Sophomore
Ryan Williams Jr. followed up Palmer Jr. with his own three-point play to make it a six-point game with three minutes to play.
A crucial technical foul called on the Bears led to four made free throws by sophomore
Jordan Sanders to give Monroe its first lead since the 6:08 mark of the first half. While Harcum responded with a bucket to retake the lead, Palmer Jr. and
Williams Jr. clutched up at the charity stripe to earn the Mustangs a wild comeback victory.
The Mustangs shot 36.1% from the field, but connected on 28 free throws to snatch the win.
Palmer Jr. led the team with 16 points — 14 of which coming in the second half — while Sanders delivered 14 points of his own. Williams Jr. scored 12 and sophomore
Hassan Washington contributed 11 points after fouling out late in the contest.
Monroe trailed by four as the first half ended. A three-pointer by freshman David Emetu made it a four-point game with just over eight minutes remaining, but Harcum rattled off a run to take a late 12-point lead. The rest was history as Monroe avenged its loss from January.
The Mustangs will return to New Rochelle for their final three games of the regular season. Sitting at 19-7, they will host Lackawanna College on Wednesday, February 19, at 7:00 pm.
