One Moment, Lasting Impact: The Story Behind the Mustangs’ Hutchinson Connection

Two-Decade Relationship Rooted in Kindness, Service, and Connection

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y.—During Monroe University men's basketball's NJCAA Division I Tournament run in Hutchinson, Kansas, the team hosted a clinic for over 60 children at a local YMCA on March 20 for one last time.

What began as a simple moment inside the Hutchinson Sports Arena has grown into one of the most meaningful traditions in Monroe Mustangs basketball history—an enduring relationship with the Hutchinson YMCA that has shaped the program's experience at the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball National Tournament for over two decades.

During one of Monroe's earliest appearances at the national tournament, the Mustangs arrived as the team that had traveled the furthest—bringing energy, determination, and pride, but without a true fan base in the stands. That changed unexpectedly when a group of local YMCA children and their director, Darrin, arrived to support Monroe, cheering passionately throughout the game.

Following the game, a conversation with Darrin revealed the simple yet powerful reason behind their support.

He shared the kids chose Monroe because, in their words, "the Mustangs were so nice."

That moment of kindness sparked a connection that would grow far beyond a single game.

What began as an organic show of support quickly grew into a lasting partnership. From that point forward, Monroe made a commitment to stay connected with the Hutchinson YMCA and give back to the community that had embraced them.

Year after year, as the Mustangs returned to Hutchinson for the national tournament, the YMCA community has been there every step of the way—opening their doors to provide practice space, filling the stands with unwavering support, greeting the team at the hotel with handmade posters, and creating an atmosphere that feels like home hundreds of miles away.

"This has never been just about basketball. It's about the relationships we've built, the lives we've touched, and the memories that will stay with us forever," said Monroe University Administrator Sandy Rodriguez. "What we've experienced alongside the YMCA kids and their families, together with our student-athletes, coaches, and staff, is something truly special. It's a bond rooted in community, connection, and purpose: one that will live far beyond the game."

Through its continued engagement with the YMCA, the program has embraced a mission that extends far beyond basketball—one centered on service, connection, and leaving a lasting impact.

As Monroe reflects on its final year at the NJCAA national tournament, the moment is both meaningful and bittersweet. While this chapter may end, the relationships formed, and the memories created in Hutchinson will remain a lasting part of the program's legacy.

For the Monroe Mustangs, this is not goodbye; it is a heartfelt thank you to a community that welcomed them, supported them, and became family.

The team also extends its sincere gratitude to the administration at Monroe University and President Marc Jerome for their unwavering support and leadership in making these experiences possible. Their commitment to student-athlete development and community engagement has allowed the program to grow beyond the game and make a meaningful impact year after year.
