Women's Basketball Coasts To 88-48 Victory Over Raritan Valley

New Rochelle, NY – The Monroe University women's basketball team earned an 88-48 victory over Raritan Valley Community College on Thursday night to move to 15-3 on the season.

The Mustangs received heavy contributions from across the board as five players scored in double figures. Freshman Sydney Huskey led the way with 22 points, while fellow freshmen Kaylyn Lelie and Carlota Lopez scored 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Sophomores Qaizden Stephano and Nicole Bencosme rounded out the double-digit scorers with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Bencosme earned a double-double in the win with 11 rebounds. She joined freshman Zanaya Parsons (13) with double-digit rebounds in the big win.

Winning the turnover battle has led to great success for the Mustangs, and it was once again a major deciding factor in the result against Raritan Valley. A 23-12 advantage for Monroe helped the home team cruise to victory.

Parsons and Bencosme led the way with five steals apiece.

The first quarter was a bit of a struggle, but the Mustangs still prevailed, 19-13. Raritan Valley sniffed the lead in the first, however, the second quarter saw the deficit for the visitors slip to 22 as the Mustangs entered halftime up, 47-25.

The second half was much of the same as Monroe kept its foot on the gas. Overall, the Mustangs scored 34 points off turnovers and earned 36 second chance points.

Monroe will head to Baltimore next to take on Baltimore City Community College. Tip-off on Saturday, February 1, is set for 2:00 pm.

ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
