NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 7, 2024 – Facing off for the first time in men's volleyball, the Monroe College Mustangs defeated the Monroe College Express in three sets in Thursday's inter-campus matchup at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 16-4 overall and 4-0 in Region 15 play with the win, while the Express fall to 0-14 and 0-3 in the region.
The Mustangs took a huge lead in the opening set and never looked back. An 11-2 advantage proved too much for the Express to work back from. The Mustangs eventually closed out the opening frame with a 25-10 win.
The Mustangs were rolling again in the second stanza, using a 11-1 run to take an 18-4 advantage. The Mustangs closed out the set on a 7-1 run to pick up a 25-7 victory.
A 13-4 lead early in the third frame set the foundation for one final set win for the Mustangs. Seven straight points made it a 21-6 advantage for the Mustangs, leading to an eventual 25-10 win to cap off the sweet.
Arnau Riu Giralt led the Mustangs with six kills in the win, adding three aces and three digs.
Damian Baker and
Devounte Bennett matched with five kills apiece. Baker finished with three aces and two blocks as well.
Timothy Reyes led the team with 16 assists, while
Gabriele Cantrell came on to dish out 10 assists of his own, adding two aces.
Ethan Grace led the team with six service aces on the night.
Joe Kieler totaled four kills, three digs and two aces.
Vene Gase and
Briggs Wieboldt both had four kills apiece as well.
The Mustangs get Friday off before getting back to work on Saturday, March 9, when they take on Bryant & Stratton College at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Saturday's match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
