NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., March 2, 2024 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's volleyball team earned their second Region 15 victory of the season on Saturday, defeating Kingsborough Community College in three sets at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 14-4 overall with the win, while the Wave drop to 1-4.
The Mustangs got off to a terrific start in Saturday evening's match at the MAC, rolling to a quick 14-4 advantage. After a kill by the Wave, the Mustangs scored 7-of-8 to grab a commanding 21-6 edge. Monroe reached set point at 24-7, closing out the opening game with a 25-9 win for a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Mustangs trotted out to a 9-2 lead in the second set and never looked back. With Kingsborough back within six at 15-9, the Mustangs went on an 8-1 run to reach set point at 24-10. The Wave got one final point before
Ethan Grace ended the second set with a kill for a 25-11 win and a two-set lead.
Kingsborough got off to a hot start in the third frame, scoring the first five points before taking a 7-1 lead on the Mustangs. It did not take long for the Mustangs to turn things around, scoring 8-of-9 to take a 9-8 lead. The Wave scored the next point to tie it back up, but the Mustangs rattled off the next four. A 4-1 run shortly after had the Mustangs up, 19-13. The teams traded points until a 4-1 run for Monroe gave the Mustangs match point, eventually claiming a 25-17 win to complete the sweep.
Briggs Wieboldt and
Arnau Riu Giralt matched with a team-high seven kills, with Wieboldt also leading the team with seven digs.
Ethan Grace was right behind them with six kills.
Timothy Reyes needed just 16 assists on the night.
Damian Baker had four aces while making two blocks and throwing down five kills and hitting .500.
The Mustangs have another pair of Region 15 matches on the docket this week. That begins with a match on Wednesday, March 6, out in Garden City, N.Y. at Nassau Community College. Wednesday's match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
