NEW YORK, N.Y., March 13, 2024 – The Monroe College Mustangs men's volleyball team remained unbeaten in Region 15 play on Wednesday, defeating Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) in three sets in a first-time matchup at the BMCC Gymnasium. The Mustangs improve to 18-4 overall and 5-0 in Region 15, while BMCC drops to 2-4 with a region record of 2-2.
The Mustangs got Wednesday's match off to a big start, rolling to a 10-3 edge over the Panthers in the opening set. Monroe then went on a 5-0 run that put them up, 15-4. The Panthers were able to get back within six late in the game, but the Mustangs scored 5-of-6 to close out the set with a 25-15 win.
A 5-0 run early in the second stanza had Monroe on top, 10-6. The Mustangs padded their lead later with a four-point stretch to go up, 17-10. The Panthers scored 3-of-4 to get within five, but the Mustangs had full control, scoring seven of the last eight points for a dominant 25-14 victory to take a two-set lead on the night.
The Panthers got into a rhythm in the third frame, taking a 10-7 lead on the Mustangs. Monroe trailed until scored three straight to take a 14-13 advantage. The game was tied up at 19-19 before Monroe finally got back on track, scoring 5-of-6 to reach match point at 24-20. They closed out the match with one final kill by
Ethan Grace to secure the sweep with a 25-21 win.
Joe Kieler took the lead Wednesday evening, finishing with a team-high eight kills in just two sets, adding four digs and three service aces.
Arnau Riu Giralt and
Devounte Bennett matched with six kills. Riu Giralt picked up a team-high six digs, while Bennett hit .600 and made two blocks. Grace hit .800 with four kills on five attacks in two sets.
Timothy Reyes totaled 32 assists, three kills, four digs and a block.
Briggs Wieboldt served up a team-best five aces.
Arthur Rosa picked up five digs.
The Mustangs face a tough test this coming Saturday, March 16, when they welcome a pair of NCAA Div. III teams to the Monroe Athletic Complex for a tri-match. Vassar College and The Sage Colleges will visit New Rochelle for the three-match day at the MAC. Saturday's action begins with Monroe vs. Vassar at 3 p.m., followed by Vassar vs. Sage, and finally, Monroe vs. Sage.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
