EUNICE, La., February 9, 2024 – Game 2 of a scheduled four-game series between the Monroe College Mustangs baseball team and NJCAA Div. II No. 2 LSU-Eunice went to the home team on Friday with a final score of 9-1 in favor of the Bengals.
 
After two frames without a run, the Bengals picked up the first score of the day in the bottom of the third on a bases-loaded walk. They padded their lead in the fifth on Collin Husser's RBI single and Bennett Clement's walk with the bases loaded to take a 3-1 lead.
 
Monroe got its only run of the day in the top of the sixth. Gilbert Gomez reached base on a wild pitch after a swinging strike three to give the Mustangs a break. He then stole both second and third before Fraelyn Rosario Pena drew a walk. Eli Gries-Smith grounded into a double play, but was able to bring Gomez home on the play to cut the deficit to 3-1.
 
It was all LSU-Eunice the rest of the way on Friday. The Bengals picked up three runs in the sixth to push the lead to 6-1. Reuben Williams managed to bring two runners home on a sacrifice bunt in the seventh to make it an 8-1 game. Cash Riley III made it a 9-1 score in the ninth with an RBI single.
 
Owen Schexnaydre earned his third win of the season on Friday for the Bengals, tossing six innings of one-run ball. Yowendy Paulino shouldered the loss for the Mustangs in his first regular-season start.
 
Diego Urreta and Ronald Almanzar each went 1-for-4 in Friday's contest. Gomez scored a run and stole two bases in the game.
 
Game 3 of the series is scheduled for tomorrow, Feb. 10, at a new start time of 1 p.m. ET (12 p.m. CT). With expected inclement weather, Saturday's schedule is subject to change.
