Mustangs Men’s Volleyball Sweeps Union at the MAC

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 28, 2024 – Playing Union College (N.J.) for the fourth time in the first month of the season, the Monroe College Mustangs men's volleyball team beat the Owls for the fourth time, taking them down in three sets Wednesday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex.
 
After dropping the first two points of the night, the Mustangs scored four straight to take a 4-2 lead on the Owls. The opening frame was still close at 14-11 before Monroe scored four straight to take a seven-point edge. Late in the game, the Mustangs used a 5-1 run to reach set point at 24-15, coming away with a 25-16 win to take a one-set lead in the match.
 
The second game was tight early on, with the Mustangs hanging on to a narrow 10-9 edge over the Owls. Monroe then swung the momentum in its favor with a 9-0 run to go up by 10. The Owls were only able to get as close as seven points the rest of the way, with the Mustangs grabbing another 25-16 win to go up, 2-0.
 
The third frame was another close one at the start, with two points by the Owls cutting Monroe's lead to 9-8. The Mustangs gained some distance with three straight points, but the Owls scored three right back. A 5-1 run for Monroe gave the Mustangs a 19-13 lead later in the game. With Union back within six, the Mustangs scored the final three points of the night for one last 25-16 victory.
 
Briggs Wieboldt led the way on offense for Monroe with eight kills. Damian Baker and Devounte Bennett both had strong nights at the net, matching with seven kills apiece. Baker led the team with four blocks, while Bennett had two. Baker hit .500 on the evening, with Bennett hitting at a .462 clip. Baker also led the team with four aces. Timothy Reyes totaled 28 assists and five digs in the win. Arthur Rosa led the Mustangs with six digs.
 
The Mustangs will be at the MAC once again on Friday, March 1, when they host NCAA Div. II St. Thomas Aquinas College. Friday's match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
