ALVIN, Texas, February 13, 2024 – A quick lead did not provide the momentum the Monroe College Mustangs baseball team needed at Alvin Community College, as the Mustangs eventually dropped a 13-3 decision to the Dolphins at Phillips Field.
Â
Diego Urreta gave the Mustangs an early jolt in Tuesday's matchup that kicked off Monroe's week in Texas. With one out in the top of the first, Urreta blasted his first homer of the year over the wall in right field to give Monroe a quick 1-0 advantage.
Â
Unfortunately, the lead did not last long for the Mustangs, as the Dolphins quickly tied the game up with an RBI double from Chris Chavez in the home half of the first. Chavez then got the scoring started in a big third-inning rally for the Dolphins that saw them bring five runs across for a 6-1 lead. Cade Baker then hit a two-run homer in the fourth to push the lead to 8-1.
Â
Monroe got a couple runs back in the top of the fifth.
Keldrin Rodriguez led off with a walk, but the next two batters did not reach base. With two down,
Justin Peguero launched a two-run homer over the wall in left, dropping the deficit to 8-3.
Â
The Dolphins continued to add to their lead over the next three innings. After scoring three runs across the fifth and sixth frames, they added two more in the bottom of the seventh to force a run-rule finish with the score at 13-3.
Â
Jacob Wingard earned his second win of the season for Alvin after tossing five innings with three runs allowed in Tuesday's contest.
Frangel Rodriguez shouldered his first loss of the year for Monroe.
Â
Peguero hit 1-for-2 with his two-run homer in the game. Urreta finished 1-for-2 with his solo blast.
Fraelyn Rosario Pena also batted 1-for-2 in the game.
Â
The Mustangs get a couple more days off before finishing up their week with the San Jacinto Tournament of Champions. They begin play on Friday, Feb. 16, when they take on Galveston College in Galveston, Texas. Friday's first pitch is set for 3 p.m. ET (2 p.m. CT).
