Hagerstown, MD – The No. 23 Monroe University men's basketball team surpassed 100 points for the first time this season in its 108-72 victory over Allegany College of Maryland on Sunday afternoon to close out the Jim Brown Memorial Classic.
Every Mustang logged double-digit minutes and no one surpassed 20 minutes, making for a wire-to-wire team effort against the Trojans. Five players scored in double figures, while four additional Mustangs generated seven-or-more points.
Sophomores
Ryan Williams Jr. and
Devere Palmer Jr. led the way with 14 points each. Freshman
Chilaka Munachimso Godswill recorded a career-high 12 points off the bench on 6-for-10 shooting.
Last time out against Allegany, Monroe used its size to showcase its prowess in the paint. This outing was no different as the Mustangs outscored the Trojans 54-8 in the paint, including a 32-2 mark in the first half.
Freshman
Eric Mejia led the charge in a dominant first half, not missing a single shot from the field or the free throw line to record 13 points. Godswill efficient too, converting on four of his five attempts inside the arc for eight first half points.
A three-pointer from freshman
Faquir Mosley pushed the lead to 30 with 14:47 remaining in the game, capping off a 20-7 run to open the half. A lay-in from freshman
Riley Dunn pushed the Mustangs past the 100-point mark.
Godswill continued his solid outing with four points and five rebounds in second half.
Sophomore
Hassan Washington and Palmer Jr. each recorded eight second half points.
CCBC Catonsville is up next for Monroe, with a road tilt on Friday, December 6 at 7:00 pm presenting the team's next opportunity to increase their win streak.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
