Bel Air, MD – The Monroe University women's basketball team bounced back from its loss to CCBC Essex on Wednesday in a major way, defeating Harford Community College, 77-50, on Thursday night.
Five Mustangs finished in double figures, with freshman
Ariel Walker putting up a career-high 17 points to lead the team while also corralling 11 rebounds for her first career double-double. Freshman
Kaylyn Lelie scored 15 points to go with a staggering 19 rebounds, while freshmen
Morgan Marshall,
Sydney Huskey and
Carlota Lopez scored 12, 11, and 12, respectively.
Despite dominating in the paint — as evidenced by a 12-4 advantage in the period — Monroe found itself trailing by the end of the first quarter. It was unfamiliar territory once again, as the Mustangs had dominated the first ten minutes through their first six games.
But a 5-and-5 second period from Walker helped the Mustangs reclaim the lead.
Up 34-32 at the start of the second half, it was all Monroe in the third. Lelie was terrific, tallying six points and eight rebounds, which included three offensive boards. Overall, in the second half, the Mustangs prevailed 17-1 in second chance points, assisting their second half surge.
Having orchestrated a 20-6 run in the third, the Mustangs kept their foot on the gas on both ends of the floor to close out the Fighting Owls comfortably. Lelie was once again the catalyst, supplying six points with ten boards.
Monroe will take the floor at home next when it hosts CCBC Catonsville on Saturday, November 23 at 1:00 pm as a part of a Monroe basketball tripleheader.
