Rochester, NY – The dominance continued for the Monroe University women's basketball team on Sunday morning as they defeated Erie Community College, 99-35, in game two of MCC Classic. The win moved the Mustangs to 6-0 on the young season.
Monroe has won its six games by an average margin of 46.2 points per contest. The offense is averaging 86.7 points per game, while the defense has given up a staggering 40.5 points per game.
Like its game against Monroe Community College the prior day, offense and defense complemented each other to perfection. Freshman
Morgan Marshall once again led the Mustangs in scoring with 26 points on 12-for-16 shooting, putting her weekend total at 63.
Fellow freshman
Carlota Lopez tallied a rare double-double with steals, chipping in 20 points to go along with ten steals. Freshman
Kaylyn Lelie also joined the double-digit department, scoring 17 points with eight offensive rebounds.
Sophomore
Nicole Bencosme was the facilitator, accumulating an impressive 14 assists.
On defense, the Mustangs compiled 38 steals and forced 54 turnovers on the Kats.
The first half was once again the difference maker as the Mustangs had the game put away within the first 20 minutes. A 28-8 first quarter was followed by an astounding 30-1 second quarter. In the second, the Mustangs forced 18 turnovers, with Lopez leading the way with five steals.
Monroe outscored Erie the rest of the way, 41-26.
The Mustangs are off to a blistering start to the regular season, and they will get to play in front of their fans for the first time in the 2024-25 season when they host CCBC Essex on Wednesday, November 20 at 6:00 pm.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE UNIVERSITY
The athletic program at Monroe University encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe University marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
