14 Mustangs Score in Monroe JV’s Victory over 238 Academy

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 22, 2024 – 14 different Mustangs contributed to a big scoring night for the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team on Monday, as the Mustangs defeated 238 Academy, 105-68, at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Monroe improves to 12-8 with the win.
 
Carey Grace-Joy led the way for the Mustangs with 16 points in the win. Turone Kelley was next with 13 points. Jordan Sanders tallied 11 points, while Ingel van Almenkerk and Ezekiel Michael both totaled 10 points.
 
Milljean Valencia added eight points, while both Clinton Johnson and Amarion Berry picked up seven. Christian Castro and Armani Walker both scored six points in the game. Xavier Washington netted five, and De'Angelo Owens, Jerry Despreux and Joel Ghiterman each made a basket.
 
Monday's matchup got off to a close start, with Monroe taking a narrow 8-7 lead with 14:19 on the clock. The Mustangs then scored seven straight points, capped off by a Grace-Joy three that gave Monroe a 15-7 advantage. The Mustangs later had another six-point run before a jumper by 238's Iliyaas Blair kept Monroe up by just 10. Monroe then closed out half on a huge run, scoring 21 straight points while keeping their guests off the board for the final 7:45 of the half, taking 47-16 edge into the break.
 
12 different Mustangs scored in the opening half, led by Sanders' nine points. Walker provided another six, while Grace-Joy and Washington each netted five. Michael led the team with five rebounds at the half. Valencia dished out a team-high three assists.
 
With the Mustangs taking a huge lead into the second half, the two teams went back-and-forth early on in the new frame. Monroe then went on a 9-0 run to push the lead to 70-31. 238 Academy was able to cut the deficit down to 29 points, but the Mustangs responded with eight in a row to go up, 84-47, with 9:28 to play. 238 got as close as 31 points, but the Mustangs added to the lead late, peaking at 47 points on van Almenkerk's dunk with 14 seconds left.
 
The Mustangs' next game was scheduled to be played on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at Harcum College JV, but that game has been canceled. Instead, Monroe's next game will take place on Sunday, Jan. 28, when they host SUNY Sullivan JV at the MAC. Sunday's tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 28 teams competing across nine sports. There are 20 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has seven teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
