NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 28, 2024Turone Kelley had a terrific afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex on Sunday, earning his third double-double of the season to help lead the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team to a 91-70 victory over SUNY Sullivan JV. The Mustangs improve to 13-8 overall with the win, while Sullivan drops to 2-4.

The Mustangs were knocking them down early in Sunday's contest, and managed to slowly distance themselves from the Generals as the half went on. A 6-0 run near the midpoint point of the period saw Monroe double-up the Generals, 24-12. Four straight points by Xavier Washington made it a 34-21 lead with 5:42 left in the half. The scoring picked up over the final five minutes of the first, but the Mustangs still managed to get the best of their guests, taking a 49-34 advantage into halftime.

Both Jordan Sanders and Kelley scored 10 points in the first 20 minutes, with Kelley pulling down eight rebounds to lead the team. Sanders provided a team-high three assists at the break. Carey Grace-Joy came off the bench to score eight points, while Clinton Johnson scored six in the half.

After six minutes of back-and-forth ball to start the second half, the Mustangs took over once again, going on a 10-2 run to make it a 66-44 lead for the home team. The Generals chipped away when they scored 9-of-11 points to get within 15, and then another five straight points to make it a 12-point game. The Mustangs then turned it around with six straight of their own to go back up by 18 points with under five minutes to play. Monroe stretched a 15-point lead into a 22-point edge with seven points in a row heading into the final minute, with a free throw by the Generals providing the final point of the game to give Monroe the 21-point victory.

After Kelley, Sanders was Monroe's next highest scorer with 16 points, adding a team-high seven assists in the win. Grace-Joy finished with 11 points and five boards. De'Angelo Owens scored 10 points in the game. Johnson provided eight points, while Armani Walker tallied six.
