Monroe Mustangs Women’s Basketball Drops Road Matchup at SUNY Sullivan

LOCH SHELDRAKE, N.Y., February 9, 2023 – Taking on SUNY Sullivan for the second time in a month, the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team lost the rematch to the Generals on the road on Thursday by a score of 68-58. The Mustangs fall to 14-13 overall with the loss, while the Generals improve to 13-9.

Thursday's contest got off to a slow start, seeing the first basket made when Brieanna Maple hit a jumper with 7:34 left in the first. After Sullivan went up, 4-3, Paetynn Gray gave Monroe the lead with a three, and then Emma Wilson-Saltos and Olivia Medford each scored to make it six straight for the Mustangs to put them on top, 10-4. The Generals then scored twice in the final minute to make it a 10-8 game heading to the second.

A 9-2 run to start the second stanza put the home team ahead of the Mustangs, 17-12. Monroe quickly closed the gap, but Maple hit a layup to put the Generals back in the lead. Amiyah Edney-Holmes then sank her second three of the quarter to give Monroe a one-point edge. Maple responded with three points of her own, but Khalia Bryant hit a jumper for the final bucket of the half to make it a 22-22 stalemate at the break.

The teams went back-and-forth early in the third quarter, with a three by Sara Carvajal-Caro putting the Mustangs ahead, 32-30. The Generals then got hot, scoring 13 straight for a 43-32 advantage. Maple later hit a three-pointer to close out the third with the home team on top, 48-36.

The Mustangs pushed back to open the fourth, outscoring the Generals, 9-5, to get within eight. Sullivan pushed its lead back up to 12 with just under two minutes to play, but Edney-Holmes hit a long ball and then Wilson-Saltos scored two to bring Monroe within seven. The Generals then made three straight free throws after a couple stops to make it a 10-point game. Edney-Holmes hit a two with 21 seconds left, but the Generals continued to make their chances from the charity stripe. Wilson-Saltos scored Monroe's final points on a pair of foul shots with 15 seconds left, and then Sullivan's Malaysia Bryant nullified them with two of her own in the final seconds to close out it.

Edney Holmes finished with 17 points and four steals in Thursday's contest. Carvajal-Caro was next on the team with 13 points. Bryant totaled seven points with nine rebounds and three assists. Wilson-Saltos contributed six points, 11 rebounds and three steals. Tanae Arnold led the team with six assists, adding seven points, four boards and two steals.
