FLORENCE, S.C., February 25, 2023 – The Monroe College Mustangs baseball team opened its trip down to South Carolina against No. 14 Florence-Darlington Technical College on Saturday. The Mustangs dropped the weekend opener to the Stingers, 11-3. Game 2 of the scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to unplayable field conditions after inclement weather came through the region.
 
The Mustangs opened the game's scoring in the top of the second. Jeremy De La Mota and Ronald Almanzar hit back-to-back singles with one out. With two down, Yeremay Moreno beat out an infield single to load the bases. Gilbert Gomez then came through with a two-RBI single into right, putting the Mustangs on top, 2-0.
 
That score held until the bottom of the third. Hunter Bryson led off with a triple for the Stingers, and then TJ Anderson brought him in with a single to cut the deficit in half. Will Dorrell doubled to right to put both runners in scoring position, and then a Dylan Johnson single up the middle brought in both runners, leaving the home team on top, 3-2.
 
Gomez led off the top of the fifth for the Mustangs with a single to right. With one out, he stole second, and then moved to third on a wild pitch. Diego Urreta brought him in with a single into left, tying the game at 3-3.
 
Things unraveled for the Mustangs in the home half of the fifth. The Stingers rallied for seven runs in the inning to take a 10-3 advantage. The Stingers added to the lead with another run in the sixth, leading to the eventual final score of 11-3.
 
Spenser Hamblen earned the win in five innings of work for the Stingers to improve to 3-0 on the season. Andrelis Payamps took the loss for the Mustangs.
 
Gomez finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a run scored, as well as a pair of stolen bases. Urreta batted 2-for-3 with an RBI. De La Mota and Almanzar each hit 1-for-3 with a run. Moreno went 1-for-2, while Jordy Batista hit 1-for-3.
 
The Mustangs get back to it on Sunday, Feb. 26, when they take on USC Sumter in a doubleheader at Carolina Bank Field in Florence, S.C. Game 1 is set to begin at 11 a.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
