NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 21, 2023 – After a slow start in the first quarter, it was all Mustangs on Saturday, as the Monroe College women's basketball team rolled to an 89-50 victory over Lackawanna College at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 12-9 overall with the win, while the Falcons drop to 7-6.
Things got off to a rough start for the Mustangs, who fell behind, 8-4, early in the first quarter. Trailing by three later in the frame,
Olivia Medford drained a three to tie the game at 10-10. Medford was then fouled on the next possession on a three-pointer, making all three chances to put the Mustangs ahead, 13-10. With the Falcons back within one,
Amiyah Edney-Holmes hit a three right before the buzzer to take an 18-14 lead into the second quarter.
The Mustangs opened the new period with six straight points to go up by 10. A three-pointer by
Aysia Pink with 4:32 to play in the half sparked a 8-0 run for Monroe to make it a 36-20 game. Another seven straight later in the quarter pushed Monroe's lead up to 21 points. Edney-Holmes hit back-to-back threes with under two minutes to go, and
Sara Carvajal-Caro closed out the half with a jumper to give Monroe a 51-27 advantage at the break.
Medford led all scorers with 14 points, as well as a team-high three assists at the half. Edney-Holmes went 3-for-3 from three-point range, totaling 11 points with four rebounds over the first 20 minutes. Carvajal-Caro totaled eight points and led the floor with seven rebounds and three steals.
The Mustangs stormed out of the locker room to score the first 13 points of the third quarter, taking a 63-27 lead in the process. Another seven straight points pushed Monroe's lead to 38 points with 2:18 left in the third. The Falcons tallied the last seven points of the quarter, sending the game to the fourth with Monroe on top, 70-39.
The Mustangs strung together an 11-0 run early in the fourth to take a 40-point advantage on the Falcons. Both teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the game, seeing the Mustangs pick up a 39-point win on their home court.
Medford finished with a team-high 22 points in the win, adding four boards, four assists and two steals. Edney-Holmes was right behind her with 20 points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists. Carvajal-Caro completed a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, adding three steals as well.
Paetynn Gray led all players with 15 rebounds on the afternoon.
Naomi Barnwell contributed nine points and six boards off the bench.
The Mustangs are back on the road on Thursday, Jan. 26, when they visit Union College in Cranford, N.J. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
