SCRANTON, Pa., February 12, 2022 – In a rematch from this past Tuesday in New Rochelle, the Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team and Lackawanna College went head-to-head in Scranton on Saturday, with the home Falcons picking up a 59-52 victory over the Mustangs on Saturday. The Falcons improve to 8-9 overall, while the Mustangs fall to 13-14.
The Falcons quickly jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first quarter, but the Mustangs managed to shut out the home team for the rest of the period, going on a 7-0 run to make it an 11-11 game heading to the second.
The momentum continued in the second frame, seeing Monroe take a 17-13 lead with 7:59 to go in the half. The Falcons then scored seven straight to go up by three, but
Naomi Barnwell tied it with a three-pointer, and then
Aysia Pink hit a longball of her own to put Monroe back up by three. Each team made a jumper down the stretch, sending the game to the half with Monroe on top, 25-22.
A three-pointer with 3:09 left in the third by Barnwell had Monroe up, 40-35, but the Falcons scored the next five to tie the game. Monroe went back up by two, but Gabrielle Jackson scored the final five points of the third for Lackawanna to put the Falcons up, 45-42, heading to the fourth.
The Falcons carried the momentum into the final frame, locking down on defense to take a 55-47 edge with 1:31 to play. The Mustangs scored three to make it a five-point game, but the Falcons made enough free throws down the stretch to keep things out of reach and hang on by seven.
Barnwell led all scorers in the game with 21 points, completing a double-double with 12 rebounds.
Sara Carvajal-Caro also registered a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.
Daja Wentz added eight points and five rebounds.
The Mustangs will look to turn things around in their final regular-season contest on Thursday, Feb. 17, a Region 15 matchup against ASA College (NYC). Tip-off at the Monroe Athletic Complex is set for 6 p.m.

The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
