NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., February 17, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team closed out the regular season on a high note on Thursday, defeating Region 15 rival ASA College by a score of 82-56 at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 14-14 overall and 2-0 in region play, while the Avengers drop to 3-13 and 0-2. The Mustangs honored sophomores

The Avengers got the early jump on the Mustangs in Thursday's matchup, going up, 5-0, before the Mustangs could get on the board. The lead reached seven before the Mustangs started to take over, going on a 14-2 run to take a 17-12 edge. ASA scored the next two, but Monroe netted the final four points of the period to take a 21-14 advantage into the second.
The Mustangs tallied the first eight points of the second quarter to go up, 29-14, on the Avengers. The lead reached 19 for Monroe before the Avengers hit back-to-back threes to get back within 13. The Mustangs then closed out the half on a 10-1 run, taking a 48-26 edge into the break.
Sara Carvajal-Caro led the Mustangs with 12 points at the half.
Naomi Barnwell totaled 11 points with four assists.
Daja Wentz had nine points, three rebounds and three assists through 20 minutes.
Aysia Pink provided eight points and three rebounds, while
Olivia Medford added seven points, and matched
Kayla Segree with a team-high five rebounds.
A 13-2 run in the middle of the third quarter put the Mustangs up, 61-31, with 4:19 to go in the period. Four straight points late in the third made it a 22-point game, eventually taking a 67-36 lead into the fourth.
Both teams went back-and-forth throughout the fourth quarter, seeing the Avengers get as close as 24 points with 23 seconds to play.
Tanae Arnold hit a couple free throws down the stretch to close out the 26-point victory.
Barnwell finished with a game-high 23 points, adding seven rebounds and four assists. Carvajal-Caro totaled 18 points with four boards and two assists. Wentz scored 17 points with seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Medford returned after missing a few games to total nine points and 10 rebounds off the bench.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 14 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
