Monroe Mustangs JV Men’s Basketball Rolls in Season Debut against Touro

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 9, 2022 – Five different Mustangs scored 13-or-more points on Wednesday as the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team cruised to a 103-73 victory over Touro College in the Mustangs' season opener at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs start the year with a 1-0 record.
 
Kofi Mends led the team with 17 points in the win, adding five rebounds and a pair of assists. Richie Guillaume was right behind him with 16 points and six boards. Davion Bonar added 15 points with six rebounds of his own, as well as three assists and three steals. Jaheim Gregory and Henry Smith each tallied 13 points on the night, with Gregory leading the team with seven rebounds.
 
It was all Mustangs to kick off Wednesday's season opener, jumping out to a quick 11-1 advantage over the Tornadoes. A three by Ebrihima Dibasey kicked of a 9-2 run for the Mustangs that put them up, 29-10, midway through the opening half. A Jacob McKinnon three, followed by a Prince-Malachi Reid layup had Monroe ahead by 27 points. The Mustangs then closed out the half with its final five points, taking a 59-27 advantage into the break.
 
The Tornadoes worked their way back a bit in the second half, beginning with an early 17-2 run that made it a 67-46 game with 14:28 still on the clock. The momentum continued for Touro, which cut the deficit to 15 points at 73-58 with just over 10 minutes to play in the second half. With the lead still at 15 points at 80-65, the Mustangs turned it back on again, going on a 12-2 run to go back up by 25 points. A layup by Amire Armstead with 36 seconds to play put the Mustangs over the century mark, eventually leading to the 103-73 final score shortly after.
 
The Mustangs hot 57.4 percent (39-of-68) from the floor in Wednesday's win, including 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) from three-point range. Depth played a big role in the game, as the Mustangs' reserves totaled 34 points, while Touro's bench added just 12 points.
 
The Mustangs are back at it next week when they host Clarks Summit University JV on Monday, Nov. 14, at the Monroe Athletic Complex. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
 
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
