NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., November 14, 2022 – For the second time in as many games, the Monroe College Mustangs JV men's basketball team surpassed the 100-point plateau, defeating Clarks Summit University JV, 104-60, Monday evening at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs improve to 2-0 on the season with the win.
The Defenders jumped out to an early 7-4 lead on the Mustangs, but Monroe turned things around with a dominant 22-2 run to take a 26-9 advantage with 9:30 left to play in the first half. Kofi Mends scored seven straight points later in the half, followed by a layup by Davion Bonar for a 9-0 run that put Monroe up, 41-16. The Mustangs then closed out the half with 11 straight points to take a 57-26 edge into the half.
Mends had a stellar first half, scoring 14 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Richie Guillaume scored eight points and pulled down a team-high four rebounds. Bonar totaled seven points and two steals.
The Mustangs opened the second half with eight straight points to take a commanding 65-26 lead over the Defenders. The Mustangs continued to tack on to their lead midway through the half, going on a 14-2 stretch to go up, 89-41. The Mustangs cracked the century mark when Prince-Malachi Reid made a layup with 5:10 to go, making it a 100-45 game. The Mustangs allowed some points down the stretch, but held on to win by 44.
Mends' 14 turned out to be the team high at the end of the game. Jefferson Liranzo added 11 points, while Bonar finished with 11 of his own. Amire Armstead netted 10 points with four boards. Ebrihima Dibasey and Ingel van Almenkerk finished the game with five rebounds apiece. Reid, O'Shamiar Majette and Henry Smith each netted nine points in the win.
The Mustangs shot 60 percent (45-of-75) from the field in the win, as well as 12-of-13 (92.3 percent) from the free-throw line. They held a 43-28 advantage in rebounds. Points in the paint went to the Mustangs, who held a 76-28 advantage from in-close. The Mustangs also held a 37-13 edge in points off turnovers.
The Mustangs take to the road for the first time tomorrow, Nov. 15, to visit Harcum College JV in Bryn Mawr, Pa. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well the Monroe College marching band and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I). The Monroe Express, based out of the Bronx campus, has 11 teams competing at the NJCAA Division III level.
