NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y., January 22, 2022 – The Monroe College Mustangs women's basketball team dropped a 97-33 final to Div. II No. 6 CCBC Essex Saturday afternoon at the Monroe Athletic Complex. The Mustangs fall to 9-11 with the loss, while the Knights improve to 16-0.
The Knights got the early jump on the Mustangs, making a pair of threes in the first two minutes and taking an 8-0 lead by the 7:47 mark. The Mustangs scored the next four on jumpers by
Olivia Medford and
Daja Wentz, but the Knights followed with a 10-1 run to go up, 18-5, eventually taking a 20-6 advantage into the second.
The Mustangs had some rhythm to open the second, cutting the deficit to 11 at 25-14 with 5:25 to go in the half. The Knights then took the momentum back, outscoring the Mustangs, 19-5, over the remainder of the period, taking a 44-19 lead into the locker room.
The Knights remained in control throughout the third quarter, outscoring the Mustangs, 20-5, to take a 64-24 edge into the fourth. That continued in the final frame, as the Knights outscored Monroe, 33-9, to close out the win.
Aysia Pink led the Mustangs with 11 points in the game.
Amy Sangare an Medford finished with four points and six rebounds apiece.
The Mustangs will look to bounce back on Thursday, Jan. 27, when they visit Div. II No. 9 Union County College in Cranford, N.J. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
ABOUT THE ATHLETIC PROGRAM AT MONROE COLLEGE
The athletic program at Monroe College encompasses a total of 35 teams competing across nine sports. There are 21 varsity and junior varsity programs, as well as the Monroe College marching band, and the newly added esports and men's volleyball programs, competing on the New Rochelle campus as the Mustangs (NJCAA Division I).
