Monroe Women’s 4x800 Relay Successfully Defends National Title as Mustangs Take Seventh at NJCAA Indoor Championships

LYNCHBURG, Va., March 8, 2020 – The women's 4x800 relay team made it back-to-back years as national champions, helping lift the Monroe College women's indoor track and field team to a seventh-place finish after the final day of the 2020 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Liberty University Indoor Track on Saturday.

The "Golden Girls," as dubbed by the Mustangs' coaching staff, successfully defended their first-place finish from a year ago on Saturday. The foursome of Thobile Amon, Joanna Archer, Thulisile Amon and Faten Laribi clocked in at 9:11.88, just under two seconds faster than the second-place team, New Mexico Junior College, to pick up the win. In addition, the Monroe women's 4x800 relay earns the distinction of First-Team All-Americans.

Archer and Thulisile Amon both earned podium finishes in the 800-meter run on Saturday. Archer astoundingly took second place with a time of 2:13.90 despite a nagging knee ailment, which earns her First-Team All-American honors. Amon was also battling an illness, but fought through it to claim third with a time of 2:16.70, earning her All-American status as well.

Sharon Chumo reached her third podium of the weekend in the mile run on Saturday. She finished the mile in 5:12.66, setting a new personal best in the event while also earning her third All-American honor of the weekend.

Phoebe Myers competed for the second time at the national meet on Saturday. In the high jump, she jumped a height of 1.56 meters.

Saturday marks the end of the 2020 indoor season. The Mustangs will continue the year with the 2020 outdoor season, which will begin in a couple of weeks.
