MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. – The Monroe University football team (1-1 overall) captured its first victory of the season with a 20-12 win over Lackawanna (0-1 overall) on Friday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
·     A blocked field goal by Lackawanna led to a 60-yard touchdown run, giving them a 6-0 lead with 13:38 remaining in the second quarter.
·     With 11:29 left in the first half, Zavry Ward launched a 27-yard touchdown pass to Diasian Noakes to give the Mustangs a 7-6 lead following the extra point.
·     In the third quarter, the Mustangs added to their lead off a six-yard run by Ward to put the Mustangs ahead 13-6 with 12:01 remaining in the quarter.
·     Then in the last quarter of the game, Mario Solano powered his way for a two-yard touchdown run to give the Mustangs a 20-6 lead with 3:13 remaining in the game.
·     Lackawanna ended the game with a one-yard touchdown run as the Mustangs secured the 20-12 victory.
STATS AND NOTES
·     With tonight's Mustangs victory, Lackawanna still holds the series lead 13-5 with Monroe winning the last two matchups.
·     Quarterback Zavry Ward went another game without throwing an interception, going 16-24 for 175 yards and one touchdown. It's his seventh game in his career without throwing an interception.
·     Noakes led the Mustangs on the receiving front, tallying two receptions for 40 yards and one touchdown.
·     Sterling Newlin tallied six tackles on the day, as Deon McKinnon tallied a sack on the day.

·     The Mustangs head down the road to Pleasantville, N.Y. to face Pace University in the Westchester Gridiron Classic on Saturday, September 12. Game-time is set for 12:00 p.m.
